'Night time - the right time,' says Tommy T-Leaf

Garden Crime is not a summer pastime! It is all-the-year-round, full time "employment " for the professional thief!
"Gardien" are predicting an even greater escalation in garden crime over the coming months. The recent "leaked" internal memo from the Home Office forecast increases in crime generally as a result of the credit squeeze, escalating food and fuel prices etc. We feel this will have a major impact on the gardening public.
As the darker nights approach, we are convinced that thieves will continue to turn their attention away from house burglaries (many of which now have sophisticated alarm systems) to the easy targets presented by our gardens. In addition, the current increase in "Metal Theft" as a result of rocketing demand from the emerging industrial countries such as China and India, also puts the spotlight on our gardens, where gates, garden rollers, benches and garden antiques are now targeted by the professional and opportunist thieves alike. Light up your security

Good lighting is a basic requirement of any security strategy for the surroundings of your home. Thieves rarely target well-lit homes and now is the time of year to make sure your lighting is satisfactory. For security purposes you have a choice between “Dusk to Dawn” or motion-activated PIR (Passive Infra Red) lights but you can buy units incorporating both aspects. The recommendation now is to use low energy dusk to dawn lighting, and this is especially so if you are overlooked, but lighting operated by a movement sensor may be appropriate . However, PIR lighting has a number of disadvantages, the main ones being:

• possible nuisance to neighbours
• the ease of tampering with them if not installed high enough (above 3m)
• they are extremely energy inefficient
• the criminal is already on the premises before they activate
• regular activation leads to distrust

Dawn to Dusk units have many positive features including:

• they are very energy efficient and cheap to run
• the lamp life is 8 to 10 times more than a typical household light bulb, particularly if you use Compact Fluorescent Lamps
• they make the occupier appear more switched on to security
• they are fail safe because you know instantly when a lamp has failed
